60-Year-old in court on rape charge
LESLIE - A-60-year-old man was remanded in custody in the Leslie Magistrate’s Court today for the alleged rape of a 19-year-old woman in September this year.
According to information, the suspect allegedly raped the victim on September 30 in his house in Lebogang near Leslie. The victim apparently attended a funeral with the suspect and his family, after which they proceeded to the suspect’s home. A while later, the suspect’s wife left the house in the company of other family members, leaving the victim behind with the suspect. The latter allegedly lured the young woman to his room, where he proceeded to rape her.
The matter was reported to the police and the suspect was arrested yesterday, October 7.
He was remanded in custody pending the investigation, and will appear in the Evander District Court tomorrow, October 9, for formal bail application.
The Provincial Commissioner for Police in Mpumalanga, Lt Gen Mondli Zuma, welcomed the arrest, and reiterated that the elder members of society are expected to take care of younger community members.
