It is one thing to run a family business in a community-orientated town, but to run it successfully and in a highly competitive field is not within just anyone's ability.

Rishad Gani, owner of Chatz Connect Hyper Cellular at the Jock of the Bushveld Centre in Barberton, is living proof that dedication yields high reward.

"If I have to do it all over again, I will, as I love what I do," he says.

Nowadays one finds small shops around every corner where you can have your cellphone repaired and purchase battery chargers and so forth, but these deals often end up in disappointment for the customer because the products are of inferior quality and, in many instances, only last for a short period before giving difficulties.

Gone are the days when a cellphone shop only offered airtime and cellphones - today we offer a myriad of services and other products such as tablets and laptops as well," he said.

Constant marketing and promotional days, during which many freebies are given away, keep customers informed about all the latest specials.

Rishad believes in staying involved with the community and giving back to his customers. Proof of this is the trolley dash which they sponsor regularly. This day, during which a lucky customer wins the opportunity to spend a few minutes in Pick n Pay filling a trolley to his/her heart’s content, has not only proven highly entertaining for onlookers, but is indeed a very unique event in Barberton.

Being in a family business has not influenced the Gani’s adversely in any way. In fact, Rishad believes it has only added positive dimensions to their lives.

“As long as you realise from the start that you should guard against taking your work home, it can be a very constructive experience indeed. My wife plays a big role in the business and her loyalty means the world to me,” he said.
