On Wednesday, CEO of Vantage Goldfields, Mr Mike McChesney, informed employees of Barbrook Mine that management has now been forced to suspend operations at this mine until further announcement.
“The situation at Barbrook Mine has become untenable as a result of continued disruptions to the work programme in recent months by elements of the employees, contractors and the community,” said McChesney.
Despite numerous efforts made by management, which included discussions with community members, contractors and employees, resolving the issues remained unsuccessful.
As November drew to a close, disruptions and illegal blockades of the public road which leads to the mine, increased. Consequently, mine management and employees have been barred from gaining access.
The suspension period will only affect certain employees of whom it won’t be required to report for duty. Current structures with management, recognised union leadership and contractors will ensure an open channel of communication with employees and stakeholders.
“The future of the mine is currently being re-assessed,” said McChesney.
