Tineka Paterson may only be 11 years old, but this dynamic young lady of Barberton is already leaving a lasting impression in the world of acrobatics, modelling, and school leadership. Known for her discipline, determination, and contagious positivity, Tineka is a local gem whose achievements and mindset make her a true role model for young people across the De Kaap Valley.

Born in Nelspruit, Tineka is the only child of Marc and Candice Paterson. She was born in Nelspruit, but the family relocated to Barberton when she was six years old. "We moved here from Nelspruit for peace and tranquility. These mountains spoke to us," her mother said. It was in this little mountain town that Tineka’s talent truly began to flourish.

Tineka has always shown an instinctive love for movement. “She didn’t start to walk as a baby, she did a split or a cartwheel,” Candice jokingly said. It was clear from the start that acrobatics was her calling. The Patersons enrolled her in the WeesLig Acrobatics Studio in Nelspruit, and Tineka has trained under coach Clara Potgieter for the past four years.

Her journey in acrobatics has been nothing short of extraordinary. She has competed at the Nationals South Africa Acrobatics event every year for the past three years and has earned her national colours twice. In July, she will attend the inter-district competition, aiming for her fourth consecutive qualification.

In addition to her athletic prowess, Tineka attends Laerskool Nelspruit, where she stands out not only academically but also through her character and kindness. She was recently honoured as "Nellie of the Month" for April in her grade, a prestigious recognition reflecting her consistent efforts in and outside the classroom.

Her mother said that her school diary is a testament to her focus on what she calls “small daily wins.” These wins range from earning full marks on a spelling test to helping clean a teacher’s classroom or supporting friends during school events. Tineka believes in making each day count by staying positive and actively choosing to do good. "She creates her own victories, no matter how small, and it keeps negativity out of her life". A lesson that some adults can learn from this 11-year-old.

Her dedication doesn’t stop with acrobatics and academics. Tineka is also passionate about modelling and partakes in modeling on a regular basis.

In addition, she uses every opportunity to contribute meaningfully in the community, whether it is through kind gestures, school support, or local events. Her holistic approach to excellence is deeply rooted in her love for Barberton, the mountains she calls home, and the support of her close-knit family.

As Tineka prepares for the upcoming inter-district trials on July 21, her family stand proudly behind her. Her story is a powerful reminder that greatness often begins with small, consistent steps and that the right environment, like the quiet strength of Barberton’s mountains, can nurture incredible talent. Keep your eye on this one, she is going places.
