As Barberton prepares for a week of world-class paragliding this June, the surrounding Lowveld is opening its arms to visitors. Among the places drawing attention is OppiDam, an experience-based destination near Badplaas that offers something very different from the usual race-day accommodation.

With the Barberton Paragliding Open taking place from June 15 to 21, and a practice day on June 14, most competitors and spectators will be based near launch points. For those wanting a fuller experience, OppiDam is inviting guests to stretch out their trip, recharge beside the water, and explore another side of Mpumalanga.

Early mornings at OppiDam begin with mist rising off the dam, and evenings conclude with stories shared around a fire.

For convenience, there’s a small on-site shop stocked with basics, and the Ararat pub and restaurant for anyone who doesn’t feel like cooking. Many visitors choose to stay an extra night or two just to soak it all in.

This winter, OppiDam is offering special seasonal rates across all accommodation types, making it easier for paragliders, families and crews to turn a high-adrenaline week into a deeper kind of Lowveld break. It may not be around the corner from the take-off zones, but that’s exactly the point.
