Every winter, as the Lowveld sun warms the ancient slopes of the Makhonjwa Mountains, the skies above Barberton come alive with a burst of colour and motion. Like petals dancing on the wind, hundreds of paragliders drift and dive over the valley, transforming the heavens into a kaleidoscope of vibrant wings and graceful flight. It’s a sight that leaves visitors breathless and locals proud, as Barberton once again plays host to Africa’s premier paragliding event.

Barberton is once again preparing to welcome the continent’s top paragliding talent as the Barberton Paragliding Open 2025 returns from June 15 to 21, with a practice day on June 14. Hosted by the Lowveld Slope Soaring Club (LSSC), this annual event has become a fixture on the international paragliding calendar, drawing pilots from across South Africa and abroad.

Why Barberton?
Barberton’s unique geography and climate make it an ideal location for paragliding competitions. Nestled in the De Kaap Valley and surrounded by the ancient Makhonjwa Mountains, the area offers reliable thermals and stunning scenery. The winter months bring predictable flying conditions, with thermal strengths ranging from gentle (less than 1 m/s) to strong (up to 5 m/s), and temperatures varying from around 10°C in the mornings to 28°C in the early afternoon.

The primary launch site, Lone Tree Hill, stands at 1,290 meters above sea level and provides a spacious, grassy take-off area suitable for various wind directions, particularly northerly and north-easterly winds. Pilots typically land at the Barberton Golf Club, situated at 830 meters above sea level, offering a convenient and accessible landing zone.

A competition for all levels
The Barberton Paragliding Open caters to a wide range of pilots, with categories including Novice, B-class, C-class, D-class, Open (CCC), Overall Woman, Overall Men, Best Team, and National Club Champions. Daily tasks are set based on weather conditions and can range from 30 km to 80 km, providing both challenges and opportunities for pilots to showcase their skills.

Community and conservation
Beyond the competition, the event supports local community initiatives and businesses, encouraging participants and visitors to contribute positively to Barberton's vibrant community. The town's rich history, dating back to the 1880s gold rush, and its commitment to preserving natural beauty make it a welcoming destination for all. Our small town’s businesses who is feeling the crunch of the economy, will once again reap the benefits of hosting this prestigious event.

Whether you're a seasoned pilot or a curious spectator, the Barberton Paragliding Open 2025 promises a week of thrilling aerial displays and community engagement. Experience the unique blend of sport, nature, and heritage that makes Barberton a standout location for paragliding enthusiasts.
