BREYTEN - The Provincial Commissioner for the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lt Genl Mondli Zuma, welcomed the hefty sentence passed by the Mpumalanga High Court Division in Breyten, wherein a 44-year-old man received an 18-years’ jail term for the murder of his girlfriend, 26-year-old Bawinile Zulu.

Robert Mandla Mthombeni allegedly murdered Zulu at her home in Carolina in May 2018. Yesterday, August 20, the court heard how Mthombeni had locked his girlfriend inside her house and set it alight, leaving her to burn to death. Neighbours at the scene rushed the victim to hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Mthombeni was arrested and charged with her murder.

Zuma applauded the relentless efforts of the dedicated investigative team who did not leave a stone unturned in bringing the suspect to book.
