Nine people were killed on impact in yet another horrific head on collision between a minibus taxi and a truck on the N11 between Middelburg and Hendrina. The cause of the accident is not yet known.

The nine were all passengers of the minibus. Eight of the deceased were burnt beyond recognition. They are believed to be employees at a nearby mine.

Both drivers of the minibus and the truck were slightly injured and are being treated at Life Cosmos Hospital in Emalahleni.

Crash investigation experts from RTMC and Safety Engineering officials from the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison will immediately begin with investigations.

The police will also investigate cases of culpable homicide.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC, Gabisile Shabalala, has expressed shock and said that motorists should use caution on the roads.

During her maiden Policy and Budget Speech presentation yesterday, Shabalala announced that this road is among those that will receive more attention in the current financial year due to the high number of accidents.

She has sent her condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The road is now partially open with with stop and go control. Motorists are encouraged to be patient.
