EVANDER – Mandla John Mahlangu (48), a Warrant Officer stationed at Embalenhle SAPS, appeared in the Evander Magistrate`s Court on 07 May 7 on a charge of corruption. This followed his arrest by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigating Unit last Saturday.

It is alleged that Mahlangu informed a suspect about a theft docket that had been opened against the said suspect, and solicited a R4 000 bribe from the latter to have the docket destroyed.

An arrangement to pay half  of the amount was then made, resulting in a sting operation in which the officer was arrested upon receiving the bribe money.

Mahlangu has been released on a warning and is due back in court on June 6.

The Provincial Head of Mpumalanga Directorate For Priority Crime Investigations, Maj Gen Zodwa Mokoena, applauded the HAWKS for their swift action.

“I urge all SAPS members to refrain from corrupt activities and  to serve and protect the country with integrity and pride,” Mokoena said.
