Members of syndicate appear on charges of illegal mining

BARBERTON – Godknows Jani (28), Galistre Ncube (36), Isaac Sithole (39), Obed Mlambo (29), Milton Dzere (27), Gift Sithole (27), Pride Chauke (19), Johannes Mlambo (35), Brightonn Musoni (28), Gift Chappies (19), Andries Mahlalela (32), Last Musanda (20) and Rodwell Ngochiwe (28), were remanded in custody in the Barberton Magistrate's Court on Monday May 8 on charges of the illegal possession of unwrought gold-bearing material.

These members of a syndicate, comprising of sixteen, were arrested on May 5 at Consort Mine during a joint operation by the Mpumalanga Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit, Barberton Crime Prevention and Mine Security. The suspects were found in possession of gold-bearing ore to the value of approximately R50 000.

The case has been postponed to May 14 for formal bail application.
