ALKMAAR - A head-on collision between a BMW SUV and a Toyota Conquest has claimed the lives of two people on the N4 Toll road at Alkmaar near Mbombela around 14:50 today.

Both the deceased were occupants of the sedan. A child, also a passenger in the sedan, sustained critical injuries. The two occupants in the SUV sustained serious injuries. All the injured were stabilised on the scene after which they were rushed to nearby hospitals.
It is believed that the SUV was en route to Johannesburg and the sedan was travelling to Mbombela.

The cause of the crash is still unknown and an investigation has been launched.

Mpumalanga  Community Safety Security and Liaison MEC, Pat Ngomane, warned motorists to be cautious on the roads amid the rising number of deadly accidents.
"We all need to play our part in curbing these crashes that leave many families devastated," the MEC said.

He urged members of the public to be calm when driving and also to obey the rules of the road to avoid unnecessary loss of life.
