MBOMBELA – A 44-year-old former school principal is expected to appear in the Middelburg Magistrate’s Court on September 6, on a charge of assault with the intent  to cause grievous bodily harm.

His appearance stems from an alleged incident at a school in Mhluzi, near Middelburg.

According to information at the SAPS’ disposal,  the suspect allegedly assaulted a 14-year-old learner, Siphamandla Fana Choma on August 2016. The latter died from his injuries. The cause of death is, however, still unknown.

Police have opened an inquest into the incident. Only preliminary post-mortem results have been received so far, but these have been sent back for further processing. The case can only be finalised once the final results have been received. The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Mpumalanga, Lt Gen Mondli Zuma, urged the community and the media not to prejudge any criminal matters, but to allow authorities to finalise these cases in court.
