MALALANE –  On Tuesday, October 11, members of the HAWKS Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, in collaboration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa and the Medicines Control Council, arrested a suspect for conducting an illegal abortion.

Police acted upon information received from the public that a fake doctor was operating an illegal surgery in the town.

An investigation revealed that the so-called doctor was not registered with the Medical Council of South Africa as a medical practitioner. He was using traditional medicines and abortion medication. Police performed a sting operation on the suspect’s surgery. At the time of his arrest he was illegally performing an abortion on a client at a fee of R700. The premises was searched and abortion pamphlets, medicine, a cellphone and money were confiscated.

The suspect appeared in the Malalane Magistrate’s Court today.
At the time of going online no update has been received on the outcome of the court hearing.
