Massive manhunt on for cash-in-transit robbers
MBOMBELA - The police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt for armed robbers who executed a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist on the Barberton/Badplaas (R38) road yesterday, May 25, at approximately 17:00.
According to information at police disposal, the CIT vehicle was en route from Badplaas in the direction of Nelspruit/Barberton, when it was ambushed by suspects travelling in a Toyota bakkie. The robbers opened fire on the vehicle, and, as soon as it came to a standstill, the security guards were disarmed and instructed to lie on the ground.
Explosives were used to access the cash in the safe, after which the suspects fled the scene.
It is suspected that the attackers blockaded the road at either side as no other vehicles had passed through during the heist.
A police investigation is underway and police are requesting anyone with information that might assist in their investigation to contact Brig Obed Ngwenya on 082 565 6417 or phone the SAPS Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.
The Provincial Commissioner for Police, Lt Genl Mondli Zuma, urged the community to assist the police to bring a stop to the scourge of CIT heists which are currently causing so much trauma and endangering so many lives, not only that of members in the security fraternity but also the lives of unsuspecting civilians and motorists who might get caught in the crossfire.
Additional information received from Capt Riaan Prinsloo from Hi-Tech Barberton:
Between 7 - 8 suspects. White Single-cab Toyota Hilux Bakkie with registration HHD 395 MP.
However, it has been confirmed that the above registration is that of a Volkswagen Golf.
