Provincial Commissioner warns shoppers to be cautious on Black Friday
MBOMBELA - The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lt General Mondli Zuma, has issued a warning to shoppers to be extra cautious on Black Friday - this Friday, November 23.
Black Friday is known as the day when retailers, big and small, reduce prices on merchandise, and offer a range of special deals on services. Shoppers descend on shops in numbers for these bargains and deals. which usually run up to Christmas and New Year’s Day. Some of the retailers open as early as shortly after midnight, and shoppers consequently queue through the night. As soon as the doors open, they start pushing and trampling one another, trying to enter first. A stampede is a real possibility, which can lead to serious injury or even death. Zuma therefore urges shoppers to be patient and considerate.
Shoppers are also advised to be vigilant and careful on the day as opportunistic criminals also regard the day as an opportunity to execute their devious plans. Shoppers should be on high alert, especially when they find themselves in large crowds.
“It is critical is that people avoid carrying large sums of cash, as criminals will be setting their sights on malls and shopping centres”, said Zuma.
